ABOUT THE EVENT

Betrayal and relational ruptures can destabilize any relationship, leaving couples searching for clarity and a path forward. With the help of a clinician, they can also become opportunities for clarity, growth, and strengthened connection. This training, led by Maureen Campion, MS, LP, explores how attachment patterns, identity, and sociocultural context shape the experience of betrayal, and how clinicians can guide partners through meaningful repair.

Participants will learn to promote trust through structured repair interventions, like guided impact statements and accountability dialogues, and clinical strategies for healthy boundaries, transparency and more in the aftermath of betrayal. Additionally, this training helps clinicians ethically evaluate their own biases, therapist countertransference, and positionality when working with relationship rupture.

Grounded in principles of secure attachment and healthy partnership, this training is for anyone looking to gain confidence working with betrayal in both couples and individual therapy.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify common attachment-based patterns underlying betrayal, affairs, and relational ruptures, and distinguish these from ongoing relational unsafety or coercive control.

  • Assess how sociocultural factors—such as gender norms, power imbalances, and marginalized identities—shape the meaning and impact of betrayal for each partner.

  • Demonstrate the use of structured repair interventions, including guided impact statements and accountability dialogues, to support couples in rebuilding trust.

  • Apply clinical strategies for facilitating healthy boundaries, transparency, and time-limited agreements in the aftermath of affairs or broken relational contracts.

  • Evaluate therapist countertransference, positionality, and potential bias in betrayal-focused couples work, and apply ethical self-of-the-therapist practices to ensure equitable, culturally responsive, and clinically appropriate care.
